When is the best time to visit Slovenia?

Slovenia is a small but diverse country and can therefore be visited year around and there will always be activities suitable for each season.

Summer - Best time to visit Slovenia in general

The summer months in Slovenia, June to August, is the country’s peak season. The climate is sunny and warm most of the time, without the heavy Mediterranean heat, and it is therefore possible to enjoy everything from city destinations to coastal towns, vineyards and hikes.

The country receives most of its tourists during this period of time. Slovenia however is a country that for many falls under the radar and even for peak season it is still not as crowded as the more famous tourist destination in Europe.

Fall - For the wine enthusiast

During late summer and early fall, September through November, the harvest seasons starts for the vineyards. For the wine enthusiast this is therefore the best season to visit Slovenia. There are multiple wine regions in the country, for example Vipava Valley and Maribor, with many picturesque and friendly vineyards to stay at.

The temperature is still reasonable and September can therefore be considered the best time to visit the country.

Winter - Best for skiing

Winter in Slovenia, from December until February, is best spent in the northwestern parts of the country where the Julian Alps are located. While many people head off to the more famous alp destinations in Italy, Switzerland and France, Slovenia can be a good option for a snowproof ski vacation without too crowded lifts and slopes.

Spring - Low season and best for outdoor activities

Spring in Slovenia, stretching from March to May, has shifting weather and can sometimes be a bit unpredictable. March is usually more rainy than April and May and with lower temperatures.

It is low season in the country for tourists and even though it is too cold to swim in lakes and the Mediterraean the spring is perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and with good prices on accomodation and flights.

In May the temperatures starts rising and it can be a cosy month to visit the capital Ljubljana and enjoy all the outdoor servings along the river that runs through the city.
