3 Must-Visit Mountain Villages in Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca’s mountain villages are renowned for their cobblestone streets, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the traditional Spanish architecture. Be sure to bring your camera, because you visitors will be welcomed with picturesque alleys, lush gardens and colorful flowers decorating the houses and quaint streets. According to me there are three absolute must-visit mountain villages in Mallorca: Deià, Fornalutx and Valldemossa. Each village offers a unique blend of Mallorcan culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes, making them ideal destinations for travelers seeking authentic charm and scenic beauty in Mallorca. To be honest, these are not only some of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca, they surely qualify as some of the prettiest towns in the world.

Stroll around the streets and shop in Valldemossa

Valldemossa is the perfect village for a short day trip. The cobblestone streets and stone houses are absolutely adorable, and in this town you’ll also find multiple cute shops with for example, wine, tea, spices, and oils. There is also a beautiful garden you can walk through. A few hours is enough for a Valldemossa visit: walk the streets, have lunch, do a little shopping and don’t forget to have a coca de patata. Valldemossa is particularly renowned for this traditional Mallorcan pastry made from potato, egg, sugar and fat, used to grease the baking tins.

How much time do I need to spend in Valldemossa? Half a day is enough for a Valldemossa visit.

How do I get to Valldemossa? Driving from Palma de Mallorca to Valldemossa takes about 30 minutes and is the best way to get to Valldemossa.

Spend a night in Deià

Deià is the most lively of these three mountain villages in Mallorca. I would therefore highly recommend to spend a night here. The village of Deià is small so you can easily experience it in one afternoon, just strolling around the picturesque streets with scenic views of the Tramuntana Mountains.

How much time do I need to spend in Deià? Spend the afternoon in Deià and stay the night.

How do I get to Deià? Driving from Palma de Mallorca to Deià takes approximately 40 minutes. You will pass Valldemossa when driving to Deià, which is why I’m recommending to spend the day in Valldemossa and then continue in the afternoon to Deià where you’ll spend the night.

One highlight of being in Deià is having dinner at one of the famous restaurants at the Belmond Hotel: Restaurante Miró or El Olivo. We had dinner at Restaurante Miró and it was such a luxurious experience, and not to mention: what a view. Make sure to book a table in advance before your visit (I’m talking at least a month ahead) because these two places are really popular. Restaurante Miró is a little bit easier to get a table at. Before heading for dinner, have a glass of natural wine at my favorite bar in Deià: El Bar.

A morning visit to Fornalutx

Fornalutx is usually referred to the most beautiful village in Spain and I totally understand why. I was blown away by how picturesque this town was. I drove up the mountains early in the morning in the hopes of beating the crowd – and I did. I started by having a cappuccino and a croissant in one of the few open cafes before starting to explore this cute little town. I didn’t really have a plan on what to do when visiting so I just walked around, trying to cover as many streets and alleys as possible and took A LOT of pictures. I even sat down on the cobblestone stairs in one small street and read a few pages of the book that I had brought. The town was so quiet and peaceful, so I was really happy that I went as early as I did. I arrived at 8.30AM, had breakfast for maybe 30 minutes. Of the three mountain villages I visited in Mallorca, Fornalutx was definitely my favorite.

How much time do I need to spend in Fornalutx? A few hours is enough to explore Fornalutx. It’s a small town.

How do I get to Fornalutx? Driving from Palma de Mallorca to Fornalutx takes approximately 40 minutes. However, many people go to Fornalutx from the closeby towns Sollér or Port de Sollér. This is what I did. I stayed in Port de Sollér and drove for no more than 15 minutes to get to Fornalutx.

For more beautiful villages in Mallorca you can read about Cala Figuera here. It is a small fishing village on the southern coast of Mallorca, only a one hour drive from Valldemossa.
