La Fortuna is one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica and there are multiple reasons why. It might not be a beach destination or the most sunny place in Costa Rica, but what La Fortuna does have is a stunning natural scenery and a wide range of activities. Located approximately 90 kilometers north of the capital San Jose and tucked away in the jungles of the country, it has something to offer for everyone, whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a nature-lover or spa-fan. Below I have listed the top 10 things to do while in La Fortuna.
Hike the Arenal Volcano
Arenal Volcano is an active stratovolcano and the most famous volcano in Costa Rica. When arriving to La Fortuna, if the weather permits, you will definitely spot it. Hiking around the volcano area is a popular activity when visiting La Fortuna. The park has well-maintained hiking trails where the two main trails are Las Coladas and El Ceibo. Las Coladas is perfect if you wish to get a good volcano viewpoint, while El Ceibe will take you through the rainforests.
Go Horseback Riding
If you want to explore the beautiful scenery of La Fortuna, but add a little twist to it, you should definitely do a horseback riding tour. You will be riding along some paths with beautiful views of the area and the Arenal Volcano, while getting to know your new little bestie.
Relax at the Hot Springs
Since La Fortuna is located in a volcanic area, the place has natural hot springs. If you want the more luxurious experience, there are some spas to visit. Otherwise there are free hot springs to enjoy in the wild. Do note that these tend to be crowded so if you wish to have it more to yourself I suggest a visit early in the morning or in the evening.
Go on a Guided Tour in the Rainforest Reserves
To get the best experience of the flora and fauna of La Fortuna, you should go on a guided tour in the rainforest reserve. The guides will tell you all about what makes La Fortuna unique, and they also have a sixth sense in where to spot animals you otherwise would miss.
Explore La Fortuna Waterfall
La Fortuna Waterfall is located in a biological reserve part of the Arenal Volcano National Park. To visit you have to pay 18 dollars. You can choose to admire the waterfall from the viewpoint only or you can walk down approximately 15 minutes (500 steps) to the bottom of the waterfall where you can also go for a swim.
Zipline in the Jungle
For the thrill-seeker, ziplining through the jungle is a must when going to La Fortuna. Head up the mountains with a cable tram and get a stunning view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, then zipline your way down.
Swing yourself into the water with El Salto Rope Swing
El Salto Rope Swing is located just outside La Fortuna town centre, meaning you can walk there. Enjoy El Salto Waterfall, swimming in the river and don’t forget to use the rope swing for a little extra fun. This activity is free, no entrance fee required!
Go River Rafting in Rio Sarapiqui or Rio Balsa
River Rafting in La Fortuna is probably the best rafting experience in Costa Rica. Get on with this adventure on the Sarapiqui or Balsa Rivers in Arenal. There are multiple rafting tours you can do with different thrilling classes.
Walk the Hanging Bridges of Arenal
The hanging bridges in La Fortuna are an incredible way to get amazing views of the Arenal rainforests and the Arenal Volcano. There are two areas where you can discover these hanging bridges: either in Mistico Hanging Bridges Park or Sky Adventures (Arenal Park).
Go on a Coffee and Chocolate Tour
Costa Rica is famous for both its coffee and chocolate production and therefore a tour is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the industry and get to try some.
